About this artwork
Georgian Bay is the northeastern arm of Lake Huron, in Ontario. It’s characterized by rugged bedrock and white pine forests to the north and sandy southern beaches. Bruce Peninsula National Park on its western side includes part of the Bruce Trail along the Niagara Escarpment. The rocks on the shores of Georgian Bay give geologists clues to the earth’s turbulent childhood. When the supercontinent Rodinia was formed, the early continents South America… and North America were pushed together and the Grenville mountain range rose up, 1.2 billion years ago. By 600 million years ago, weathering and erosion had worn away the Grenville Mountains. The swirling patterns in the rocks here are the deep roots of the mountains and all that is left of this ancient mountain range. The strange folds tell of rocks under great pressure, temperatures of up to 1200 degrees centigrade, and depths of up to 25 kilometers, able to flow like toffee, as one continent mated with another.
« Expressing my love of colour and design, my paintings convey a sense of spirituality. The concept of ‘flourishing’ is a prominent theme in my work. »
David Tomlin is an exciting Canadian painter who has exhibited his work nationally, including in the US, Canada and France. Self-taught and creating from a signature Canadian perspective, he composes surreal, vibrant paintings that exalt natural light and colour. He is influenced by Impressionism, and more profoundly by Canadian First Nations artists in their representations of humanity's relationship to the natural world. Tomlin's semi-abstract style showcases purpose, intensity and an energizing visual flourish. Together with a love of colour and a passion for design, Tomlin's paintings evoke a sense of contemplative spirituality expressing his understanding of the three ‘transcendentals’- BEAUTY, GOODNESS, and TRUTH.
