About this artwork
We walked for hours on the windswept beaches of Tofino
new beginnings…our dreams and toes mingling with sand
centuries old - a magical sensation of fingertips touching fingertips…
for the first time a yearning to hold you closer… sharing a kiss as gentle as a baby’s belief
taking all of the strength that I have to simply let go of that moment…
Michael Poyntz – Excerpt from Tofino Moments
Tofino is a small community on the rugged west coast of Vancouver… Island, known for its natural beauty and surf culture. ... Tofino lies adjacent to the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and its exquisite beaches line an ancient coastal temperate rainforest. The name, Tofino, honoured Vincente Tofiño, a Spanish hydrographer who taught Galiano cartography during the expedition. The current townsite of Tofino was officially established in 1909 on the Esowista peninsula, taking its name from Tofino Inlet.
« Expressing my love of colour and design, my paintings convey a sense of spirituality. The concept of ‘flourishing’ is a prominent theme in my work. »
David Tomlin is an exciting Canadian painter who has exhibited his work nationally, including in the US, Canada and France. Self-taught and creating from a signature Canadian perspective, he composes surreal, vibrant paintings that exalt natural light and colour. He is influenced by Impressionism, and more profoundly by Canadian First Nations artists in their representations of humanity's relationship to the natural world. Tomlin's semi-abstract style showcases purpose, intensity and an energizing visual flourish. Together with a love of colour and a passion for design, Tomlin's paintings evoke a sense of contemplative spirituality expressing his understanding of the three ‘transcendentals’- BEAUTY, GOODNESS, and TRUTH.
