About this artwork
"Subterranean" was inspired by Tycho's countless commutes via the subway in a number of cities around the world. He is always intrigued by the geometry and perspective observed in such places, and by the varying states of repair and decay. Tycho is especially drawn to the older subways, which have an almost catacomb-like atmosphere, one that Tycho is drawn to, not in a morbid way, but due to the incredible textures and colours found there.
David… painted this work in a very loose style, and he allowed chance and subconscious whims and inclinations to steer the painting in unplanned directions. The end result is an expressionistic abstraction rather than a descriptive illustration. The viewer is invited to interpret the image in their own way.

David Tycho is a prize-winning Canadian artist whose paintings have been widely exhibited on a national level, as well as in the United States, Switzerland, Belgium, and Singapore. His art is distinguished by the exploration of varying subjects and differing artistic approaches. Inspired to create from nature, urban expansion, and the people he encounters, Tycho translates these influences onto canvas in an improvisational, expressive, and abstract manner. He paints using acrylics with brushes, palette knives, trowels, sticks, and rollers.
