About this artwork
In Maybe in May, I explore connections between people that are both present in the painting and elusive, as if the figures are caught in a shared moment of freedom and movement. The piece is a dense, semi-abstract composition in acrylic, watercolor, and pencil. It weaves together abstract forms and recognizable human shapes and gestures into a gathering of bodies.
The palette shifts between cool greens and blues, warmer flesh tones, and sudden flashes… of red, echoing both natural landscapes and the energy of human figures, allowing viewers to drift between recognition and ambiguity. The layered composition feels full and fluid, capturing the sensation of bodies in motion without ever resolving into a fixed scene, matching a sense of harmony within the apparent chaos, as if the figures are merging with an environment that is alive and ever-changing.

Dick van Dijk is an Amsterdam-based artist who draws and paints. His work is inspired by the male figure and balances between control and intuition. Dick compares his process to collage, composing, modifying, deconstructing and reconstructing human shapes in layers of paint and colour. Painterly discoveries during the working process create new elements and dynamics. In doing so, he seeks a duality between recognisable forms and less elaborate parts to create a lively image. In some works, (parts of) figures are hidden, while in other works bodies appear, visual clues to what is or is not there.
The results are bodily forms that tell layered stories of freedom and intimacy, close to the skin and viewed through the lens of memory and expectation.
