About this artwork
The action, the interest, the plot are all off-screen... Something is happening on the right side of the image... the strange, headless spectators seem quite attentive and captivated by... we'll never know... the only clue is the human presence (the young woman)... the expression on her face, as well as her folded hand, suggest that the scene she's contemplating is rather troubling, even tragic, without actually threatening her; the limpness of her…
arms makes this very clear... We're observing "people" observing other people (presumably), so we'll never know anything... It's an empty image... devoid of action... devoid of meaning... We know nothing and we never will...
