About this artwork
The background is a view from space, by Google Earth, of the valley of the Kolyma river, oriental Siberia. The place is known for it's goulag, where perished several million people on the strech of thirty years, out of exhaustion and harsh conditions, extracting gold and other minerals. The satellite image shows the ponds and rubble scattering the valley, and remnants of forest around .
The horizontal vision, superposed, shows a derelict mirador… and broken barbed wire. The goulag was ended in the middle of the 1950's.
Dominant and partly mingling in the background, the monumental statue by Ernst Neizvestnyi, the Mask of Sorrow, in memoriam, where the people come to remember and pray, on the outskirts of the city of Magadan.
Suffering...redemption?
Donald Le Heron, a painter passionate about nature, began art as a hobby. Using mainly oil, he likes to paint "thickly", creating vibrant layers of color. Inspired by Chagall and Picasso, he developed a technique based on superposition, uniting varied aspects of a place on the same canvas. His works invite travel and contemplation, capturing the essence of distant places, their beauty and uniqueness in a way that is both calming and provocative.
