About this artwork
The painting was inspired by the iconic chalk cliffs of the German island of Rügen. I used my own handmade modeling paste made from Rügen chalk and acrylic binder to give the cliffs their rough, textured surface. The resulting cracks are not only visually appealing, but also have a meaning: these cliffs are fragile, constantly eroding, and parts of them regularly fall into the Baltic Sea, turning the water milky white.
The chalk formations are beautiful,… but also dangerous. Like the cliffs of Dover in England, they are best admired from a distance—or even better, from the sea. For the colors, I layered acrylic paint, ink, and acrylic ink to reflect both movement and depth.
