About this artwork
"Ladybirds" is a surreal acrylic painting and part of my series on climate change. It addresses the problem of insect plagues, which are exacerbated by global warming. Huge swarms—such as locusts—can destroy fields and crops. A few years ago, northern Germany experienced an unusually large ladybug population—they covered beaches, houses, and paths. Although ladybugs are harmless, such a mass appears unnatural and unsettling.
This painting visualizes… the idea that such mass developments are a man-made problem – that's why the ladybugs are streaming out of a mouth into the world.
The work is made with acrylic paints on special paper for acrylic painting (15 x 10 cm) and is presented in a frame (16.5 x 11.5 cm) designed by me with graphite paste.
Doreen Gehrke is a self-taught artist and geologist whose scientific background significantly influences her artistic work. Structures, strata, natural processes of formation, and the aesthetic language of the earth are reflected in many of her pieces. This combination of geological knowledge and intuitive painting technique forms the basis for her Emotional Landscapes – atmospheric, often abstract landscapes that depict inner states, moods, and memories rather than real places. The pricing of her artwork is primarily based on the technical and time-related effort of the painting process, while the size of the work plays a secondary role. Further information can be found on the artist's website or on her social media profiles at @doreengehrkeart.
