About this artwork
"Purple Forest" depicts a snow-covered forest landscape, entirely enveloped in soft shades of violet and lilac. Beneath the night sky, a tranquil expanse of snow stretches out, revealing gentle hills and shadowy hollows. The conifers in the foreground and middle ground appear particularly three-dimensional due to their textured, snow-laden branches, while the tree line in the distance shimmers silver in the diffuse moonlight. The atmosphere is still,… clear, and slightly mysterious—as if one were stepping into a moment of profound stillness. The violet palette reinforces this sense of peace and deep nighttime quiet, while the soft moonlight creates a gentle, almost protective mood. The work invites the viewer to pause and immerse themselves in this wintry tranquility—a landscape that is both calming and subtly melancholic. I painted this oil painting in 2017, and it is one of my first works.
Doreen Gehrke is a self-taught artist and geologist whose scientific background significantly influences her artistic work. Structures, strata, natural processes of formation, and the aesthetic language of the earth are reflected in many of her pieces. This combination of geological knowledge and intuitive painting technique forms the basis for her Emotional Landscapes – atmospheric, often abstract landscapes that depict inner states, moods, and memories rather than real places. The pricing of her artwork is primarily based on the technical and time-related effort of the painting process, while the size of the work plays a secondary role.
