About this artwork
This work is an oil study on an unusual painting surface: unprimed jute. The coarse, open structure of the jute creates a distinctive, earthy texture that lends additional depth to the image.
The motif shows a section of a towering wave just before it breaks. Using various shades of blue and white, the painting captures the flowing movement of the water and the play of light and shadow on the water's surface.
The raw, natural surface of the jute… makes the brushstrokes appear rough in places and brings a haptic character to the picture. The work radiates both power and tranquility—like the sea itself, which can be both untamed and meditative.
