This is a watercolor from 2008. I have tended to work on watercolors in groups at approximately 10 year intervals. The 2008-9 pieces are often lighter and have a nice cheerful feel. This one is somewhat unusual for its vertical orientation.
Douglas Shippee is a dedicated painter with a BFA from the University of Minnesota, an MFA from Indiana University, and has spent 35 years in New York’s Hudson Valley working with oil, acrylic, watercolor, and gouache. His technique is deeply intuitive; oil and acrylic works are layered and reworked over time, while watercolors and gouaches embrace spontaneity and immediacy. Through abstract forms and occasional figurative elements, he seeks to evoke profound psychological and personal narratives, conveying the rich emotional complexity of what it means to be human.
