About this artwork
Like a balmy breeze coming off the ocean, I began this painting with new materials, not knowing how they would affect the intent or outcome of the painting. I chose watersticks, which I had never worked with before (at this scale).
As with any experiment, sometimes they work out and other times not so much. And in this unique instance, in taking away what I didn’t like, I unexpectedly made something of the contrary, a happy accident- something I… did like.
I began by making marks with the Thalo blue indicative of using sticks as opposed to a brush. Though I had no idea it had such a peculiar intensity. I promptly didn’t like what I saw and proceeded to erase it with water and cloth. In an effort to “correct my mistakes,” I ended up creating a cool, smeared effect that became a signature of the painting.
Eileen Starr Moderbacher is a painter and printmaker, trained at the Art Institute of Chicago and California College of the Arts, whose roots in both Chicago and the Bay Area deeply inform her practice. She masterfully employs abstract techniques, wild brushwork, and bold, playful color palettes to create layered compositions that evoke the rhythmic complexity of music. Her work delves into themes of mortality, nature, and interconnectedness, inviting viewers to lose themselves in exuberance, wonder, and the vibrant depth of existence.
