About this artwork
In 2004 werd op het vroegmiddeleeuwse grafveld van Solleveld, even ten zuiden van de stad Den Haag, een unieke vondst gedaan: een botengraf. Het doet ons denken aan het bijna 1500 jaar oude verslag van Procopius, waarin deze Griekse historicus beschrijft hoe de mannen uit dezelfde regio zielen van de doden naar Groot-Brittannië brachten. Het landschap van Solleveld (de duinen bij de Noordzee en de stad Den Haag) en de legende inspireerden de kunstenaar…

Elise Eekhout is a visual artist working at the intersection of painting and graphic design. Her practice explores the language of light, texture, and text. By combining traditional techniques with contemporary materials such as gold and silver leaf, she creates layered works that shift with light and perspective. Depending on where the viewer stands, words emerge or vanish, landscapes solidify or dissolve. Her paintings therefore never remain static: they are living surfaces, changing with time, movement, and light.
