About this artwork
People ask me how I find what I am compelled to paint. This series, with the title "Grasses" came about when I was at an artist colony in California. I was there, twice for 3 months each time. I drove around finding places where i could see nature. I took pictures of many subjects and found that the plants were the most unique from what I had known. I found myself taking pictures one plant in particular called the flax plant. What drew me to this… subject? Some were six feet tall while others on median strips were two feet tall. The plant itself was large and round so that I could get very close and take closeups as if I were a bird. The fronds were long and stiff , some with beautiful burnt tips. When I stood away from the plant, the fronds that bent over created a gorgeous pattern that moved with the wind. When I was up close with the fronds backlit, I could see almost every color. I have spent years developing this series which I regard as both abstract and realistic.
« I now see my career as a series of new expansions followed by the refinement of long periods of physical application. »
