The bubble coral (Plerogyra sinuosa) is a stony coral that inflates its characteristic,… water-filled "bubbles" during the day to support the photosynthesis of its symbiotic algae. Native to the Indo-Pacific, it retracts the bubbles at night, when its feeding polyps emerge to capture plankton from the current. Bubble corals prefer sheltered areas with gentle water movement, and their stinging tentacles can severely damage neighboring corals.
