About this artwork

Marlene Dietrich challenged convention long before it was widely accepted. In the 1930s, she wore trousers and tailored suits — both on screen and in public — at a time when such choices were considered scandalous. She moved through rigid social structures with deliberate defiance.

A symbol of glamour and seduction, she also openly acknowledged her bisexuality, refusing to be confined by expectation. Her presence unsettled norms. She did not ask… for permission.

In this Body of Water, she is portrayed as a current flowing against resistance — elegant, self-possessed, and unapologetically autonomous. Like water, she adapted her form without surrendering her direction.
