Residual Tension I originates from a single, dense horizontal gesture placed low on the canvas. The form carries weight and compression, suggesting pressure rather than movement.
The surrounding surface was not built up, but reduced, softened and partially opened, allowing the space around the gesture to breathe. What remains is not the intensity of the initial act, but its afterstate.
The textured lower area retains subtle traces of friction,… while the upper field holds a quiet stillness. The painting occupies the space between impact and release, where tension no longer erupts but lingers, restrained, suspended, unresolved.
