About this artwork
Residual Tension VII explores the moment where movement begins to fragment under its own weight. Unlike earlier works in the series, the gesture no longer flows continuously across the surface, but appears interrupted, eroded, and partially reconstructed.
Layers of pressure, friction, and removal remain visible throughout the painting. The central area becomes a space of resistance, where the gesture seems caught between persistence and dissolution.… Rather than resolving itself, the movement fades, reappears, and gradually loses certainty.
The surrounding white space remains intentionally open, allowing the traces of the gesture to resonate in silence. What emerges is not a fixed image, but the lingering tension of something attempting to hold itself together while slowly coming apart.
Els Devrieze is a Belgian painter whose work explores intensity, stillness, and the physical presence of paint.
Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, she builds layered surfaces that function as inner landscapes rather than literal depictions. Her practice is driven by intuition and material engagement, allowing tension and balance to emerge through texture, color, and restraint.
Devrieze’s work invites sustained looking, offering space for reflection without prescribing a fixed narrative.
