About this artwork
Residual Tension II expands the language introduced in the first work of the series. A compressed band of Prussian blue occupies the upper part of the canvas, carrying the physical weight of the gesture while leaving a vast field of quiet space beneath it.
Rather than describing movement, the painting holds the residue of it. The mark appears suspended, dense and unresolved, while the surrounding surface remains largely untouched.
Subtle variations… in texture disturb the stillness of the lower field, suggesting traces that linger beneath the calm surface. The work does not depict the moment of action, but the tension that persists afterwards — restrained, silent, and slowly dissipating.
Els Devrieze is a Belgian painter whose work explores intensity, stillness, and the physical presence of paint.
Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, she builds layered surfaces that function as inner landscapes rather than literal depictions. Her practice is driven by intuition and material engagement, allowing tension and balance to emerge through texture, color, and restraint.
Devrieze’s work invites sustained looking, offering space for reflection without prescribing a fixed narrative.
