About this artwork
Residual Tension III expands the gesture into a more dispersed condition. What was once concentrated is now stretched, thinned, and partially interrupted.
The horizontal line no longer carries a single, continuous force. It begins with weight and control, then gradually dissolves into a more fragile presence before accumulating again toward the edge.
The surrounding space remains open and largely untouched, allowing the tension to exist within… a field of stillness rather than resistance. The work is less about impact, and more about the persistence of a force that has already passed through.
What remains is not resolution, but a subtle imbalance — a tension that continues to exist, distributed, suspended, and unresolved.
Els Devrieze is a Belgian painter whose work explores intensity, stillness, and the physical presence of paint.
Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, she builds layered surfaces that function as inner landscapes rather than literal depictions. Her practice is driven by intuition and material engagement, allowing tension and balance to emerge through texture, color, and restraint.
Devrieze’s work invites sustained looking, offering space for reflection without prescribing a fixed narrative.
