In "Spatial Curvature," iron wheels, iron reinforcement, steel floats, and granite combine to form a multifaceted structure that not only occupies space but also "bends" it—a visual, metaphorical representation of the idea of spatial curvature itself. The arrangement of the elements creates a dynamic within the space, guiding the viewer's gaze, moving it between structure and emptiness, matte and reflection, and thus questioning the perception of… space and form. The interplay of light and shadow doubles these relationships between the basic geometric elements. The individual elements carry their own stories, thus introducing time as a fourth dimension: the sphere was a steel float from an old machine in a disused factory in the Black Forest; the granite base dates back to my time in Munich and was a section of a sculpture; I later found the reinforcing mesh on a construction site in Bamberg; and I discovered the iron wheels in a fire pit in the Steigerwald forest.
Erik von Brandt is a sculptor, painter, graphic artist, and photographer with a foundation in stone carving and diverse training. He combines organic figuration with abstract form and works subtractively, with an open process, primarily using stone, wood, steel, and natural materials, complemented by graphic and painterly experiments. His works radiate a palpable resonance: a quiet energy, a balance between vulnerability and strength, inviting inner reflection and genuine listening.
