About this artwork
One of my oldest paintings, which already reveals many of my central artistic interests. Created by overpainting an older canvas, it combines transformation, material history, and density. Traces of the creation process—such as the craquelure in the center—remain deliberately visible, while the layering over an earlier landscape depiction is still discernible.
The figure appears poised between movement and stillness: Is it standing still, turning… right or left in a circular arc? The image captures a moment in between and opens up space for further stories.
The reduced color palette unfolds a surprising plasticity depending on the light. What initially appears calm begins to resonate between space and time, past and future.
Erik von Brandt is a sculptor, painter, graphic artist, and photographer with a foundation in stone carving and diverse training. He combines organic figuration with abstract form and works subtractively, with an open process, primarily using stone, wood, steel, and natural materials, complemented by graphic and painterly experiments. His works radiate a palpable resonance: a quiet energy, a balance between vulnerability and strength, inviting inner reflection and genuine listening.
