The materials each have their own story. I found the vertical board in a fire pit in the Hauptsmoor forest, charred and with traces of white paint. The driftwood attached to the top came from the Baltic Sea beach. After days of observation, an upright rhombus shape emerged, which I deepened with a chisel. During the winter months, a red, black, and white scrap of canvas appeared, which I then added as a final touch.
The reduced, cross-like form… condenses into a serene center—like a concealed mask, a suggested face between layer and fracture. Surface and structure show traces of erosion and fire, while the vibrant grain of the wood hints at inner movement. The small red flicker of the center enlivens without burning further.
This creates a tension between meditative stillness and dynamic energy—simultaneously collected and awake, or open to new interpretations.
Erik von Brandt is a sculptor, painter, graphic artist, and photographer with a foundation in stone carving and diverse training. He combines organic figuration with abstract form and works subtractively, with an open process, primarily using stone, wood, steel, and natural materials, complemented by graphic and painterly experiments. His works radiate a palpable resonance: a quiet energy, a balance between vulnerability and strength, inviting inner reflection and genuine listening.
