About this artwork
Irène Némirovsky, Russian by birth, a talented novelist who wrote in French, had applied for French nationality in 1938 but was not granted it. She remained convinced to the end that France would protect the Jews. In July 1942, Irène Némirovsky was arrested, interned in Pithiviers, and deported to Auschwitz, where she died of typhus on August 19. One of her daughters, Denise Epstein, was able to save and preserve in a suitcase the manuscript of her…
mother's last novel, "Suite Française," and subsequently devoted her life to the posthumous recognition of her entire body of work. This last manuscript is simply sublime; it is a most precious literary landmark, such an effective style. Her story is a testament to this moral debacle, Auschwitz, and its irrefutable demonstration of the failure of culture.
