About this artwork
This painting is of Salome dancing the "Dance of the Seven Veils". My main inspiration to this series is the music Richard Strauss' opera "Salome", to which the series was painted. This is Salome's dance to free herself, to make her own rules. Some veils have already been shedded. While Salome is dancing her seductive, wild, and erotic dance, the background symbolises her tumultuous inner world.
Fie Freja Sandkamm is a painter and opera singer from northern Denmark, now based in Hamburg, Germany, whose rich background in both music and art infuses her creative practice. Working primarily with spatulas and guided by intuition, she allows spontaneity and emotional honesty to shape a luminous, expressive style. Her painting practice is rooted mainly in figurative expressionism, with women as a recurring motif—often depicted in dance—exploring themes of liberation, self-discovery, and inner freedom. Alongside this, she also works in abstract painting, where movement, colour, and emotional atmosphere take precedence over form. A further recurring theme is nature and watery reflections, symbolising a longing for serenity and centredness in an increasingly chaotic world. Drawing from lived experience and personal transformation, her work radiates vulnerability and strength, offering viewers both tranquility and an invitation to reconnect with their own inner resilience.
