About this artwork
Sandalwood Paradise comes from the series on the smell of the country entitled "ÛDÈ" (to smell in the Kanak language of the East Coast), a New Caledonian nose having created a body perfume corresponding to each work. Here is its story:
The small, multi-ethnic team had been formed over the course of Captain Watson's quest, having once commanded a whaling ship. The latter was steam-powered, like our powerful chief tug, which made one wonder if he… slept with his pipe. His evolving map of the sandalwood route still contained gray areas, among which nestled even a mysterious island, roughly located by Hawaiian canoeists. In the hold, the scent of the heart of this tree was fragrant to the bone. Promiscuity must have felt easier. My hammock was next to that of Dipsi (Ocean), originally from Vanuatu, which itself adjoined that of Temanu (Bird), a native of the Austral Islands.
Stéphane Foucaud, a graduate in visual arts from Strasbourg, expresses himself primarily through painting. His technique blends American Neo-Impressionism and tribal art, with an innovative use of acrylic, Indian ink, and burnt paper collages. His art, known as neo-tribal, revisits the cultural heritage of his native New Caledonia, oscillating between mythology, history, and identity. His works, vibrant with color and form, captivate the viewer, evoking a striking tension between the ancient and the contemporary, the particular and the universal.
