About this artwork
The work Yonaguni tells us about a world lost to time, along with its civilization; a few vestiges remain, notably the sarcophagus of a mermaid. The painting is part of a series depicting alternate histories about the discovery of the Pacific islands.
In 1643, Frans Jacobszoon, cartographer of the Dutch flagship, the Heemmskerck, left writings about a hostile population who greeted them with a hail of arrows. His recorded nautical measurements… are said to have pinpointed the location of a pyramid emerging from the ocean, upon which the indigenous people had stood. The location of this structure corresponds to the area around Yonaguni Island, southwest of Okinawa, where a submerged prehistoric city was discovered in 1985. This city is also featured on a map, created by Colonel James Churchward, which revealed the mythical continent of Mu in 1926. The pyramid is now believed to lie 22 meters underwater following an earthquake...
