This photograph shows a seabird colony of kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) and northern fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis) nesting in summer on the colourful cliffs of Krisuvikurberg in southern Iceland.
One cannot help but notice the red, orange and black colours of these cliffs, the distinct tones of ancient layers of volcanic stone that have piled upon each other over centuries. The Atlantic Ocean has eroded clear marks on this coastline and the distinct… mineral strata of these cliffs are impressive to behold. I have captured the raw texture and vibrant hues, and the variations of deep red mixed with traces of grey and white invite quiet contemplation, evoking images of distant and forgotten lands. Each crack and chip paints part of a larger narrative, a celebration of natural persistence.
Frédéric Demeuse, photographer and naturalist, was immersed in art from a young age. He employs a variety of techniques to reveal the hidden beauties of the "great outdoors" in all its richness and complexity; from the subtle details of the animal, mineral, and plant worlds to the most remote forests and grandiose landscapes. His works, often idealized and timelessly black and white, inspire wonder and invite deeper reflections, evoking a profound and restorative connection with the extraordinary diversity of our biosphere.
