About this artwork
This painting is based on the view across the valley at Symonds Yat, a landscape shaped by depth, distance, and shifting light. It reflects an ongoing interest in places that feel both expansive and familiar, where the act of looking becomes slowed and attentive.
The composition is structured through layers of receding hills, each softened by atmosphere and subtle tonal shifts. Light moves gently across the landscape, dissolving edges and allowing… forms to merge and reappear. Rather than describing the scene in detail, the painting focuses on the experience of being within it.
As with much of my work, it moves beyond direct representation, seeking to capture a sense of presence and quiet observation. It is a reflection on stillness, distance, and the enduring rhythm of the natural world.

Francesca Currie is a classically trained oil painter based in the UK, with a background rooted in the sight-size method and a BA (Hons) in Fine Art, furthered at LARA. She blends Old Master traditions with expressive, contemporary techniques—her alla prima method and bold use of light imbue landscapes with both lively immediacy and subtle atmosphere. Her works evoke a sense of calm, optimism, and wonder, inviting viewers to pause, reflect, and find beauty and resonance in fleeting moments of the natural world.
