About this artwork
The ideas of the shapes and colours came to Parhelion at the same time; the twists like knotted roots, the splashes like milk and honey and yolk, all against a blue background, comforting like an ocean or an oasis. He had no title until one morning he slowly came awake at dawn, saying the Goddess's name in realisation: "Ishtar... it's Ishtar!" Then he set to work.
This painting, then, is an depiction of the Goddess Ishtar: the promise of hope; the… relief of water in the desert; the surge of fertility; blood, salt, milk, the rich Earth; love; life itself. Quick-drying acrylic paint helped achieve the interplay of concepts symbolised by the shapes and colours on the canvas.
« I aim to directly communicate symbolism to the viewer, bypassing preconceived notions and striking to the heart of the relationship between viewer and artwork, observer and observed. »
Fred Phillips, also known as Parhelion, is a painter based in Barbados whose works highlight the act of creation itself as the ultimate message. He views life as vibrant, filled with riotous energy that is in constant motion, which he embodies in his works through the use of raw colors. For Phillips, a spontaneous demonstration of creativity is the very antithesis of despair. His abstract expressionist works are created using acrylics on canvas.
