About this artwork
This work was inspired by, and is a representation of, the Roman messenger God Mercury (hence the play of names in the title--the liquid metal mercury is also called "quicksilver"-- and the use of liquid metallic silver paint). It presents his colours and expresses his symbols: Air (the colours orange and yellow, symbols of thought, the mind, and intelligence); the caduceus, Mercury's winged staff of power; and his alchemical sigil, depicted here…
dividing to release his quicksilver essence in the process of active creation. Parhelion very much hopes that the colour palette and the symbolic representations of fluidity, activity, and motion in creation come through to the viewer as intended. The choice of quick-drying acrylic emphasises the immediacy of Mercurial action (he is the God of swiftness as well). The abstract nature of the work emphasises Mercury's shape-shifting inconstancy and many aspects.

Fred Phillips, also known as Parhelion, is a painter based in Barbados whose works highlight the act of creation itself as the ultimate message. He views life as vibrant, filled with riotous energy that is in constant motion, which he embodies in his works through the use of raw colors. For Phillips, a spontaneous demonstration of creativity is the very antithesis of despair. His abstract expressionist works are created using acrylics on canvas.
