About this artwork
The idea for “Scheherazade (Desert Song”) came to Parhelion as soon as he started working on its sister piece, “Araby”. When he saw the first strokes of black on yellow, like calligraphy, he determined to revisit those colours in a suitable design. The story of Scheherazade & her “Tales of 1,001 Nights” was the perfect theme. The painting seeks to call forth the lyricism, beauty, & poetry of the “1,001 Nights” through the relationship of rhythmic… tension in its internal elements of shape, form, & line. The painting vibrates like a story, which is like a poem, which is like a dance, which is like a (desert) song.
« I aim to directly communicate symbolism to the viewer, bypassing preconceived notions and striking to the heart of the relationship between viewer and artwork, observer and observed. »
Fred Phillips, also known as Parhelion, is a painter based in Barbados whose works highlight the act of creation itself as the ultimate message. He views life as vibrant, filled with riotous energy that is in constant motion, which he embodies in his works through the use of raw colors. For Phillips, a spontaneous demonstration of creativity is the very antithesis of despair. His abstract expressionist works are created using acrylics on canvas.
