About this artwork
Two wild boars dominate the picture—powerful, tense, as if in the midst of an archaic ritual. Their movements appear raw and immediate, an expression of energy and instinct.
In the background stands a goat holding a two-headed white rat—an enigmatic symbol somewhere between a sacrificial offering and an object of power. Next to it sits a black cat, silent and watchful, like a silent witness to the events.
A single star shines above the scene,… followed by a rainbow. Scattered raindrops fall through the composition—a surreal mixture of menace and hope.
"Call to the Dance" combines animal power with mystical symbolism. The painting doesn't tell a clear story, but rather opens up space for interpretation, instinct, and the unconscious.
Friederike Toeppe, a visual artist, draws, paints, and creates textile art. Her technique varies between detailed, figurative oil painting and handcrafted textile sculptures, playing with the tension between realism and symbolism. Her themes include the web of relationships between humans and animals, nature, vulnerability, and power. Her works stimulate reflection and invite us to consider our relationship with nature and society.
