About this artwork
In this semi-abstract painting I combine oil, sand and organic materials to create a deep, texture-rich scene. It shows the unimaginable effect of climate change on nature in the Sahel region (here: Darfur), which is at great risk of desertification. The central motifs of this work - radiating lines and the dark, striking core - symbolize the source of life, or rather its drying up. This artwork speaks of the tireless renewal and struggle for survival… in all of us. It is intended to ignite a powerful, inspiring energy in any room.
Günther Baechler, an art teacher, painter and peace diplomat, works with natural materials such as sand, stones and wood. He applies a bird's eye view, which gives his semi-abstract works an unusual appearance and sets them apart from typical landscape paintings. The focus on earth colours and textures presented in large-scale works suggests environmental changes. His artworks, which process his experiences in conflict areas, convey intense emotions and invite reflection, projecting the viewer onto the depths of the human experience.
