About this artwork
My "Mask" series explores the hidden, darker facets of modern individuals living in contemporary society. I found that luxury goods serve as a perfect visual metaphor for the way we often prioritize the gaze of others over our own authentic selves.
In this work, I sought to harmonize Eastern and Western elements by placing modern, Western-style luxury items against the traditional texture of Korean paper (Hanji). This juxtaposition represents the… complex cultural landscape we inhabit today.
Rather than simply casting a negative light on these outward desires, my intention is to encourage viewers to look beyond the "mask" of material symbols. Through this series, I invite you to peel back these superficial layers and embark on a journey to rediscover your true, untainted ego hidden within.
Eun Gabi, trained in traditional Korean painting and visual design, masterfully weaves East Asian aesthetics with a contemporary narrative flair. Utilizing Hanji, natural pigments, acrylics, and oil pastels, she layers symbolic imagery and dreamlike scenes, blending refined ink discipline with expressive modern textures. Her art oscillates between the societal tension of concealed identities and the luminous, fearless spirit of childhood. Ultimately, she aspires to awaken healing, resilience, and a rediscovery of innocence within viewers, offering a gentle sanctuary where comfort, reflection, and renewed courage blossom.
