The French language contains tricky words, and "ravissement" is certainly one of them. In its most common usage today, "ravissement" evokes ecstasy, rapture, enthusiasm, and it is certainly a feeling of this kind that one can read on the face of the young woman with her head thrown back, or of the man, Adam, who appears discreetly on the right of the image, also with his head thrown back. But "ravissement" is also synonymous with abduction, kidnapping,…
often violent, and this is also what this scene represents where a faun abducts the young woman... An ambiguous painting, therefore, like its title.
