The Temizu-ya ritual. A woman in a kimono purifies her left hand and then her mouth with sacred water at a small fountain. The miraculous water is believed to bring long life and good health. It is necessary to purify the body and mind before praying. One purifies one's hands and mouth because these are the two parts of the body that will be used during prayer: one claps to invoke the deity, and one prays using the mouth.
