About this artwork
This charcoal drawing focuses on the quiet elegance and presence of the human figure through subtle tonal transitions and the careful use of light and shadow. The model, originally from Portugal, inspired the title The Portuguese Swan, a poetic reference to grace, serenity, and quiet strength emerging from darkness.
Through charcoal I sought to emphasize form, atmosphere, and the emotional intensity of the subject’s gaze. This drawing was selected… as a finalist in the International ARC Salon organized by the Art Renewal Center in the portrait and drawing category.

Gerardo Monroy is a Mexican figurative painter working primarily in oil and charcoal, with a solid background in classical fine arts training and extensive independent study. He masterfully employs techniques rooted in Old Master traditions—layered oil painting, dramatic chiaroscuro, and meticulous anatomical observation—while infusing his work with a contemporary sensibility. His paintings evoke deep emotional resonance, conveying vulnerability, strength, and introspection that invite intimate reflection and universal connection.
