About this artwork
San Francisco takes shape as a layering of memory, in which the landscape emerges as the trace of a crossing rather than a recognizable image. The surface is marked by horizontal and vertical lines that allude to the suspended structure of the Golden Gate Bridge, perceived as architectural tension and a lived experience in space.
The paint settles and wears away at the same time: glazes, abrasions, and drips convey the idea of a place observed… in motion, filtered by time and the distance of memory. The light intercepts residues and discontinuities, while the muted hues suggest a restrained, almost mental vision.
The work is part of a study of travel as a material and perceptual experience. It doesn't describe a destination, but preserves the imprint of a passage, transforming urban space into a surface of memory, unstable and persistent.
Giampiero Riccobello, born in Rome, works between Rome and Milan, using painting, sculpture, and unconventional materials, drawing on a background in art history. His style oscillates between informal abstraction and conceptual exploration, favoring processes of layering, subtraction, and material interventions on neutral surfaces, with earthy colors and unexpected accents. His works evoke an indirect human presence and transform common materials into symbols, conveying a sense of suspension, intimacy, and a reflection on memory and the passage of time.
