About this artwork
In this piece, I wanted to explore the tension between stillness and sudden energy. I began with a muted, slate-gray foundation to create a sense of depth and weight, then broke through that calm with bold, vertical strokes of crimson and burgundy. I find that these vibrant reds feel even more intense when they sit against a dark, industrial tone.
This painting is a very personal part of my commitment to sustainability. I created it on a piece… of archival mat board that was left over from the framing process in my studio.
Usually, these high-quality, acid-free centers are discarded, but I see them as a beautiful, sturdy canvas with a history of their own. By repurposing this museum-grade material, I am able to give a second life to something that was meant to be thrown away, turning a fragment of the "framing world" into a standalone work of art.
For me, this artwork is also about sustainability and showing that art can be environmentally conscious.
Gina Vor (Goda Smilingyte) is a painter who learned her craft in her father’s studio, guided by hands-on mentorship and lived experience rather than formal academic training.
Her unique technique fuses the passionate, gestural energy of Abstract Expressionism with the serene discipline of Minimalism, creating works that explore both chaos and calm through bold brushwork and intentional simplicity.
Her paintings evoke profound emotion, aiming to capture the raw, unspoken beauty of fleeting moments and subconscious feelings.
