About this artwork
During the Edo period in Japan (1603-1868), strict sumptuary laws prohibited non-nobles from wearing fine fabrics or elaborate decorations. In response, luxury was disguised with outward sobriety: forbidden designs were secretly hand-painted on the lining of simple black jackets, known as haori.
These hidden illustrations were called Haura-e, literally “image behind the Haori”.
In this series I reveal my personal Haura-e painted on fabric: dreamlike… visions, fragments taken from the symbolic repertoire, evocative images, hidden suggestions left to filter through.

Giorgia Moretti is a contemporary Italian artist whose work focuses primarily on painting and drawing, also extending to printmaking and sculpture. Her works explore the relationship between the visible world and interior life through symbolic and visionary imagery.
Drawing inspiration from anatomy, nature, myth, and personal imagination, she creates works in which female figures, animals, and organic forms become narratives suspended between beauty and mystery.
A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna with honors, she has exhibited in Italy and abroad, including Paris and Buenos Aires. Her works are held in private collections.
