About this artwork

Concrete Metaphysics takes the reader on a fascinating, unusual and metaphysical journey through Italy. Metaphysics is concerned with what lies beyond the physical universe we perceive. This can only be suggested through metaphors: here the camera becomes a tool to create them and, as the title suggests through an oxymoron, to describe a concrete metaphysics.… Black and white photographs, many on large-format film, show mysterious and unsettling places.

Giovanni Maria Sacco, photographer and former university professor, is influenced by Magic Realism and the Metaphysical School of De Chirico. His style, defined as poetic and elegant, plays on the absence of time in the images, working by subtractions. He uses different techniques, applied to the subjects, and creates images at very high resolution without loss of quality. His works reveal impermanence and the true reality beyond appearances, transmitting a sense of mystery, alienation and the beauty of decay.
