About this artwork
The San people, also known as Bushmen, are members of various Khoisan-speaking indigenous hunter-gatherer people representing the first nation of Southern Africa. The ability of these Later Stone Age hunter-gatherers to sustain themselves has been seriously challenged during the past 2 000 years
These nomadic tribes once occupied all of southern Africa, however the successive arrival of the Bantu, sedentary farmers,… and livestock Hottentots has decimated the population and has pushed them into small areas of unproductive land.
The community documented in this essay live in Grashoek village on the north-eastern tip of Namibia.
