About this artwork
In my oil on cradled wood painting "Cherry Blossom Rain - Kyoto", a woman lifts her red umbrella against the Spring rain as she walks along the flagstone streets in the Gion district. Gion, a center of traditional arts and entertainment, is lined with wooden buildings marked by hanging lanterns. Like a scene from a film, the past merges with the present in a quintessential Japanese moment depicted with a modern, impressionistic sensibility. The moment… is both melancholic and beautiful, capturing the Japanese aesthetic of mono no aware—a gentle sadness for the transience of things.
I have held a lifelong fascination with Japan, a country I first visited at the age of ten. This enduring interest has profoundly influenced my artistic practice, leading to numerous series of paintings, solo exhibitions in Osaka and Tokyo, and a deep engagement with Japanese art history and culture.
