About this artwork
This painting is my first collaborative work and I was honoured to work with a painter I greatly admire, Christopher Kuhn. The painting recalls both the collaborative pieces of the Baroque era, where one artist would specialize in the animals or the fabrics while another would paint the flesh of the figures, and a more modern, post photographic approach to painting characterized by the painted blurred images of Gerhard Richter.
This work took @christopherkuhn… and I both out of our comfort zones; but we came up with a concept that divided the composition into clear zones - Chris was responsible for the abstract painting within the painting while I tackled the figure and the background. Making an abstraction knowing that the center would be covered over was a new challenge for Chris. Likewise, I realized that for the piece to work as a whole, the figure would have to be painted slightly out of focus, a feat unto itself.

I grew up between two opposing worlds—strict control and complete freedom. I learned early that what we’re told to believe and what actually feels true don’t always match. That tension never left me. My work lives there.
I don’t give answers—I obscure them. Each painting is built to hold tension, giving you just enough to recognize something, but not enough to settle into it. When you stand in front of the work, you’re not just looking—you’re participating. The painting acts as a mirror. What you see says as much about you as it does about the image.
I’m not interested in approval. I’m interested in reaction—what you project, what you recognize, what stays with you.
