About this artwork
From Water to Earth is one of the first works in my Newborns series. At that time, I was still painting very intuitively, without fully realizing what this research would reveal.
This scene evokes a birth experienced in continuity and gentleness. The newborn seems still connected to its original environment: water, warmth, touch. The gestures are enveloping, the body remains close to the mother's, and the passage to the outside world occurs without… immediate rupture.
It was only in retrospect that I understood the unique place of this work. It already carried, silently, an answer to the fear of abandonment that runs through my work, by proposing another possibility: that of a birth where connection and security precede separation.
