About this artwork
I stood still for a long time without taking out my camera. There are images that you first have to feel before you photograph them. This was one of them.
What disturbed me wasn't the size. It was the eye.
That dark cavity in the stone stares at you with a calmness that isn't indifference—it's knowledge. As if it knows exactly who you are, where you come from, and how long you've been in this world compared to it. And the answer is so insignificant… that it doesn't even warrant moving.
I set up the tripod almost at water level. The long exposure transformed the sea into silk, into something between liquid and smoke, and suddenly the rock wasn't resting on the water—it was floating on it. As if the sea had been its bed and the sky its roof since before the word horizon even existed.
