Harold Smith is an influential multidisciplinary artist, educator, and cultural critic based in Kansas City. Through painting, filmmaking, and writing, he documents the complexities of the Black experience, jazz history, and racial identity.

Holding degrees from Kansas City Kansas Community College, Union College, and Webster University, Smith dedicated 36 years to teaching computer science and art in urban communities.

As a visual artist, his exhibition record includes prominent solo shows at the Mulvane Museum of Art, Studios Inc, and the Nerman Museum, alongside international showcases in France. He passionately uses art for activism, ensuring his work remains accessible to underserved local communities.

A prolific contributor to KC Studio magazine and an accomplished documentary filmmaker, Smith’s cultural impact has earned him the 2022 Charlotte Street Visual Artist Award, a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, and a 2022 MacDowell Fellowship.
