This still life represents the act of creation, both in life and in art. The tropical bird in flight is a mysterious creation of natural selection, and the brush belongs to the artist; it is unusable, hardened with a thick layer of white paint, a sign of an artistic drought (a period of less resources). The brush and jar were painted from direct observation, while the bird was a distant model; the artist notes, "this specific bird probably lived…
far away, and has probably died by now, but its image lives on through the Internet and this painting." The large, quick brushstrokes of the black background echo the motion of the wings. The bright white floral print could be seen as wallpaper.

Hazel Miller is an exciting American talent whose works have featured in exhibitions and prizes in the US and Canada. Drawing inspiration from observations in daily life, such as passing thoughts, moods and feelings, she composes works that focus on the nature of perspective, the female experience and the concepts of internal and external body and mind. Sometimes gestural and loose, sometimes representational, each of Miller's paintings showcase minimalist polish, subtle colour shifts and and a standout aesthetic signature.
