About this artwork
"I Spy" is a new genre for Heather, a polar opposite. It's more sedate and classic. Since each painting she begins is purposely an experiment, and ends as a discovery, she will work until a visual language evolves, just like the buildings she used to design. She'd work the masses and facades until it's own visual language had evolved.
Typically, Heather starts paintings on virgin white canvas, and layers the pigment until the work becomes a… statement like joy, a snapshot of organic movement, or maybe mathematic precision. In his piece, the field of deep charcoal is lifted with lightness, in a classic, metallic, urban rhythm.
She lived in Manhattan during the third year of her undergraduate degree. “I Spy” is a reminder of the glint off of the Chrysler building's sharp turret-like edges at dawn, when the sidewalks were bare, and a few loners made their way down Fifth Avenue. That's what she spied on a hazy, lavender orange morning out the window of her architecture school.
« If any brushstroke or scrape of the palette knife awakens the emotional part of your mind, the place where you visualize no tangible object you’ve ever known, that is enough. »
